About the course

Τhe course introduces students to the study and development of design methods and processes as they interact with the fields of graphic arts and visual arts. Students are exposed to the theory, philosophy, tools and practices of conceptual design, delve into the principles of visual perception, and develop skills related to the construction of "identity", such as the conception and transformation of ideas, purposeful design, strategy of representation and the formulation of projects for display in different media, while making use of specific computer design  software. In this context, they are trained in the creation and management of identities and the composition of their recognizability, in the creative composition of image and text, simultaneously investigating issues of color, typography, layout, style, content, as well as other elements such as the recognition and study of target audience.

The course aims to find the common ground between art and graphic design, exploring various applications such as book and album covers, logos, posters, and other advertising material through a creative and interdisciplinary educational process. At the same time, the concept of identity is explored, not only in terms of its advertising or corporate dimension in the context of naming and commercial promotion of products (branding, marketing), but also as an integrated and recognizable visual language. In this way, the course equips students with a set of practical and conceptual tools for conceiving and conveying meaning and information. At the same time, it prepares them for the 'Graphic Arts II' courses: Visual Storytelling', and 'Atmospheres: Visual Language and Conceptual Design', in which they develop these skills further in a more complex context, incorporating their theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of motion graphics, advertising, information design and art video.
